A drilling rig is a generic term for a series of mechanical devices that drive drilling tools to the formation  drilling, also known as drilling machines. The main function is to drive the drill bit to break the bottom rock and drill or lift the drill bit in the well.
 
The drilling rig should have the ability to drill down, rotate the hole and  cycle it. The main equipment are derrick, crane, winch, swimming block, big hook, turntable, faucet (or power faucet), drilling pump, power machine (diesel, electric motor, gas turbine), linkage, solid control equipment, well control equipment.
